I started getting into music around age 8 after seeing the Beatles on ABC when The Beatles Anthology was airing. The video for Hello Goodbye with Paul McCartney's psychedellic Rickenbacker 4001s was all I needed to see and hear. That lead to a deep dive into the Beatles and later on Pink Floyd and KISS. In my mid teens I was introduced to Rush.
I started playing bass around 13 years old. My influences include the aforementioned Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Steve Harris, Gene Simmons, John Taylor, Mick Karn, Geezer Butler and of course Geddy Lee. I am entirely self taught on bass and learned every song I know by ear.
At age 18 I first attempted to sing seriously. I was given a few tips on breathing and projection by my father and I started to delve into some of my favorite singers techniques. Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, King Diamond, Freddie Mercury, Bono and David Sylvian are all major influences. I used to practice my chops live at local karaoke bars. I also recorded a couple covers of songs. One of those got me into a Judas Priest tribute which later added Larry Kremer. Larry and I jammed some Rush at practice one day when I brought a bass with me and everyone else took a break. I remember seeing the reactions of everyone in the room. There was something special going on.
After Neil Peart passed Larry suggested we play at a little tribute that was going on. We quickly recruited a guitar player and I borrowed a keyboard. I've only previously dabbled in keys but never did it primarily as I saw keyboards being the main thing holding a Rush tribute back. But this lit the fire. I got a keyboard and some MIDI pedals and started to practice. I've pretty much learned that instrument for this project. Some of my favorite players include Rick Wakeman and Tony Banks on the synth side and Rick Davies and Elton John on the piano side.
Outside of the band I work for the federal government at Veterans Affairs.
